Bitcoin Plunges Below $77,000 as Binance Hack Triggers $1.5 Billion Liquidation Wave

Bitcoin suffered a sharp sell-off on October 30, 2026, falling below US$77,000 after Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, disclosed a major security breach involving billions of dollars in digital assets.

Bitcoin dropped to approximately US$76,460 before recovering toward US$78,500, according to CoinDesk. Ethereum also fell sharply, while Binance-linked BNB lost more than 7% as investors responded to the incident.

The decline triggered approximately US$1.53 billion in cryptocurrency liquidations over 24 hours, demonstrating how leveraged trading can amplify market volatility.

Binance Breach Affects an Estimated $6.3 Billion

The sell-off followed unusual transfers from Binance-controlled cryptocurrency wallets on October 29.

Blockchain investigators initially identified suspicious movements involving several billion dollars across multiple networks. Binance subsequently acknowledged a security breach affecting an estimated US$6.3 billion in assets.

According to Reuters, the exchange has worked with partners to freeze approximately US$3 billion in affected assets and pledged to cover customer losses.

An initial investigation suggested that an attacker may have compromised an employee's computer to gain unauthorized access to internal systems.

However, the final amount stolen, recoverable funds and precise method of attack remain subject to investigation.

Leveraged Trading Deepens the Sell-Off

The market reaction was intensified by leveraged positions being automatically liquidated as cryptocurrency prices declined.

According to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk, bullish positions accounted for approximately 84% of the US$1.53 billion liquidation total.

When leveraged long positions are forcibly closed, the resulting selling can add downward pressure to an already declining market.

Bitcoin and Ethereum accounted for more than half of the liquidations, while Binance handled approximately US$755 million in forced closures.

These figures illustrate how an exchange-specific security incident can rapidly affect the wider cryptocurrency market through interconnected trading and derivatives activity.

What Does This Mean for Bitcoin ETF Investors?

For investors accessing cryptocurrencies through exchange-traded funds, the incident highlights an important distinction between Bitcoin price risk and exchange custody risk.

Products such as the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) and Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB) provide exchange-traded Bitcoin exposure without requiring investors to manage cryptocurrency wallets themselves.

However, these funds remain vulnerable to Bitcoin price volatility, even when their own custody arrangements are unaffected by security incidents at cryptocurrency exchanges.

For GCC investors, the development also highlights the importance of diversification as regional exchanges expand their investment offerings. The upcoming ADX listings of South Korean ETFs KDEF and KMCA, scheduled for November 2, will provide access to South Korea's defense, semiconductor and advanced manufacturing industries, offering investment exposures distinct from cryptocurrencies.

While these products carry their own market risks, their arrival reflects the growing range of international investment opportunities available through GCC exchanges.

For Bitcoin ETF investors, the immediate priority remains understanding custody arrangements, market liquidity and the potential impact of exchange-related disruptions on cryptocurrency prices.
