Bahrain Bourse Launches BHD 40 Million Market-Making Fund to Boost Liquidity

Bahrain Bourse has announced the establishment of a BHD 40 million (approximately US$106 million) Market-Making Fund, bringing together major institutional investors to strengthen liquidity and trading efficiency across the Kingdom's capital market.

Announced on November 3, 2026, the initiative forms part of Bahrain Bourse's Capital Market Development Plan 2026-2028, known as Elevate, which aims to modernize market infrastructure, expand investment opportunities and attract greater investor participation.

Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, the Kingdom's sovereign wealth fund, has joined as a strategic partner, alongside Osool Asset Management, Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK), and National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) as seed investors.

UAE-listed Al Ramz PJSC has been appointed fund manager, adding a cross-border dimension to Bahrain's capital-market development efforts.

How Will the Market-Making Fund Improve Trading?

Unlike conventional investment funds, the initiative is designed primarily to enhance liquidity in selected listed securities.

Market makers provide buy and sell quotations, helping investors execute transactions more efficiently while potentially reducing bid-ask spreads and improving price discovery.

This is particularly important in markets where limited trading activity can make it difficult for investors to buy or sell securities without affecting prices.

The fund's effectiveness will ultimately depend on how its capital is deployed, the securities selected and whether trading activity becomes more consistent.

Part of Bahrain's Wider Capital-Market Strategy

The initiative supports Bahrain Bourse's Elevate programme, which includes 46 initiatives targeting market development, liquidity, new investment products and investor participation.

Al Ramz's appointment also strengthens financial-market cooperation between Bahrain and the UAE, demonstrating how regional institutions can contribute expertise and capital to neighboring exchanges.

For Bahrain, deeper secondary-market liquidity could improve the attractiveness of existing securities and support future listings by reducing trading costs and execution uncertainty.

What Does This Mean for GCC ETF Investors?

The development could also have implications for Bahrain's emerging exchange-traded fund ecosystem.

ETFs depend partly on the liquidity of their underlying securities. More consistent trading and narrower spreads can make it easier for ETF market makers to price, hedge and trade funds efficiently.

The initiative complements wider efforts to improve cross-border market access across GCC exchanges, although Bahrain's new fund is not itself an ETF, and direct support for ETF trading has not been announced.

For investors comparing GCC-listed ETFs and regional investment opportunities, improvements in market liquidity could eventually broaden the range of accessible securities and investment products.

The key test will be whether the BHD 40 million commitment translates into sustained trading activity, tighter spreads and greater investor confidence in Bahrain's capital market.
